Commercial Food Delivery Riders & CAM RIDER London

Camrider have been offering motorcycle instruction since 1977. Over the years we have adapted our training to keep our students ahead of the ever-changing licensing laws that have been introduced in an effort to reduce road casualties. We are one of the longest-established motorcycle schools in the country and are on the committee of the MRTA, which gives us the ear of the DSA and the transport minister when it comes to consultation on the implementation of new regulations affecting motorcyclists.

In recent years we have become more involved in vocational training for professional riders in the food industry, a group of riders who have, until now, escaped the attentions of the regulators relatively unscathed. In conjunction with Pizza Hut we have constructed a course of instruction for moped delivery drivers that goes beyond the present requirement of the law, and since 2001 we have held the UK contract for their rider training. Pizza Hut UK being industry leading in their approach to rider training and safety have won many commendations from the motorcycling industry and the government for their proactive attitude to rider development and environment.

Professional Riders, Health and Safety and the Law

While it is currently legal for a learner rider (CBT holder) to use a moped for work, there is a conflict with health and safety guidelines. How many operators of high-risk machinery do you know who are allowed to do so with a learner's permit and without supervision? Pizza delivery riders have the worst working conditions, the most hazardous occupation and generally the lowest pay of any company employee. The net result is that the vast majority of riders are young foreign men who have recently arrived in this country, speak little English and have no knowledge of our traffic laws. Regardless of the licensing laws as they stand, it could be argued that these people should undertake slightly more training than that required to put a commuter on the road as a learner rider.

The government will not allow the present situation to continue and the choice for the industry is stark. Either it adopts suitable and effective training practices or it will be regulated, most likely with the introduction of compulsory full licences and job-specific training. Camrider and Pizza Hut have, in conjunction with health and safety guidelines, constructed a training scheme for professional food delivery riders that has significantly reduced serious accidents over the past 4 years and that, if adopted industry-wide, will almost certainly reduce the need for draconian legislation. At Camrider London we run approximately 1,000 courses per year for Pizza Hut who cover 8 million miles on their scooters over the same period.

After you have examined your company’s statistics, consider the real costs of accidents with regard to down-time for bikes and riders, court battles, compensation pay-outs and administration costs to name but a few. Attention paid to quality, targeted training at a modest cost both in time and money will save your company thousands in the long term and create a safer, happier, more productive environment for your riders.
