Training Syllabus
Training should always be conducted by specially qualified instructors.
Camrider only uses fully qualified instructors for all sections of our courses, giving you the best possible chance to learn.
What to expect:
Instruction
The legally allowed ratio for CBT road ride and Direct Access instruction is 2 pupils to 1 instructor. CBT on-site allows for up to 4 pupils to be taught in the classroom and on the training pad by 1 instructor.
It is considered best practice to ensure that all on-road training, no matter at what time, is in a class size of no more than 2 pupils to one instructor. Camrider pioneered this and is proud to be amongst the leading voices in the UK and Europe to improve rider safety.
On-road training must have radio communication from the instructor to the pupil and fluorescent tabards must be worn to show who is who.
Please note the CBT road ride must last for a minimum of 2 hours and all 500cc or 600cc training must be carried out by a specially qualified DAS instructor. Your instructor will take you through all the elements of the DVSA practical test and make sure you have the skills and confidence to pass easily.
Tests
Before you start your riding test on the road, you will be asked to read a number plate to prove you can meet the eyesight requirements. You will also be asked two machine safety check questions before moving away.
The examiner will check your licence and identification and if you wish, will tell you what the test is about and how long it will take (about 40 minutes). They will help you to fit the radio and earpiece and explain how they work
Examiners give candidates step-by-step instructions during the test apart from a section where the candidate will be asked to drive independently. For all other parts of the test, candidates will still get step-by-step instructions.
In the independent driving section of the test, you’ll have to drive independently by either following:
- traffic signs
- a series of directions
- a combination of both
Test question combinations
Below are some possible combinations of questions you could be asked during your test:
Combination 1
Identify where to check the level, ie dipstick or sight glass. Explain that level should be between max and min marks. For dipstick remove the dipstick and wipe clean, return and remove again to check oil level against max/min marks. For sight glass, ensure the glass is clean when checking.
Check is carried out by using control (turn on ignition if necessary)
Combination 2
Identify reservoir, check level against high/low markings
Operate switch (turn on ignition if necessary), identify reflectors. Check visually for cleanliness and operation
Combination 3
Check for chain wear, correct tension and rear wheel alignment. Tension should be adjusted as specified in the machine handbook. Drive chain should be lubricated to ensure that excessive wear does not take place
Handlebars should be free to move smoothly from full left lock to full right lock without any control cables being stretched, trapped or pinched and without any snagging between moving and fixed parts
Combination 4
Correct tyre pressure settings can be found in the owner’s manual. Pressures should be checked using a reliable gauge. Tread depth must be at least 1mm deep, forming a continuous band at least ¾ of the breadth of the tread and all the way around. There should be no lumps, bulges or tears
Wheel the machine forward and apply the front brake
Combination 5
Identify where to check level, ie dipstick or sight glass. Explain that level should be between max and min marks. For dipstick remove dipstick and wipe clean, return and remove again to check oil level against max/min marks. For sight glass, ensure glass is clean when checking
Operate switch (turn on ignition if necessary), identify reflectors. Check visually for cleanliness and operation
Combination 6
Correct tyre pressure settings can be found in the owner’s manual. Pressures should be checked using a reliable gauge. Tread depth must be at least 1mm deep, forming a continuous band at least ¾ of the breadth of the tread and all the way around. There should be no lumps, bulges or tears
Check for excessive travel on the brake lever and the brake pedal and for unusual play or sponginess
Combination 7
Identify where to check the level, i.e. dipstick or sight glass. Explain that level should be between max and min marks. For dipstick remove the dipstick and wipe clean, return and remove again to check oil level against max/min marks. For sight glass, ensure the glass is clean when checking.
Operate switch, without the engine being started
Combination 8
Correct tyre pressure settings can be found in the owner’s manual. Pressures should be checked using a reliable gauge. Tread depth must be at least 1mm deep, forming a continuous band at least ¾ of the breadth of the tread and all the way around. There should be no lumps, bulges or tears
Handlebars should be free to move smoothly from full left lock to full right lock without any control cables being stretched, trapped or pinched and without any snagging between moving and fixed parts
Combination 9
Identify reservoir, check level against high/ low markings
Operate switch, without the engine being started
Combination 10
Check for chain wear, correct tension and rear wheel alignment. Tension should be adjusted as specified in the machine handbook. Drive chain should be lubricated to ensure that excessive wear does not take place
Check is carried out by using control (turn on ignition if necessary)
