Full Licence Types
Here we go over the different categories of Motorcycle licence available, and what you need to get them.
Which Category of Licence do you need?
There are different categories of motorcycle licence available, depending on your age, with each step up in licence giving you the right to use higher power motorcycles.
To get this licence you will need either:
- To be 24 years of age or older, and have passed your CBT, Theory test and Practical.
- OR to have held an A2 licence for a minimum of 2 years, and be over 21 years of age.
On passing: You can ride any motorcycle, any power, no restrictions.
To get this licence you will need:
- To be 19 years of age or older
- Must have passed your CBT, Theory Test and Practical
On passing – you can ride any motorcycle up to 46Bhp
You can buy many bikes that produce up to 46Bhp, such as the Honda NC700. You can also restrict any motorcycle to 46Bhp, so long as the original power output was not over 92Bhp. It’s really easy to get a bike restricted and a good motorcycle shop will be able to help.
There are no automatic upgrades of licence – if you wish to move up to a full (A) licence you will need to retake the module 1 and 2 tests on an unrestricted 600cc bike when you have reached 24 years of age or held the A2 licence for 2 years.
To get this licence you will need:
- To be aged 17 years or older
- Must have passed your CBT, Theory Test and Practical Test (on a 125cc bike)
On Passing:
You will be limited to driving just 125cc but will be able to take off your L plates and carry a passenger.
There is no automatic upgrade after 2 years if you wish to move up to an A2 or A, you will have to retake the module 1 and 2 tests on the appropriate bike, either:
- a restricted 46Bhp bike for A2
- or an unrestricted 600cc bike for an A
To get this licence you will need:
- To be aged 16 years or older
- Must have passed your CBT, Theory Test and Practical Test (on a 49cc moped)
On Passing:
You can ride up to 49cc moped without L plates and carry a pillion passenger (sat behind you). You will also be allowed to drive a light quadricycle car – 5Bhp – limited to 28 Mph.
There is no automatic upgrade after 2 years if you wish to move up to an A2 or A, you will have to retake the module 1 and 2 tests on the appropriate bike, either:
- a learner legal 125cc for A1
- a restricted 46Bhp bike for A2
- or an unrestricted 600cc bike for an A
